Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity, Inc. follows Biblical Economics. Exodus 22:25 tells us that, " If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, you shall not deal with them as a creditor; you shall not exact interest from them." Thus, all of the houses that we build are sold at NO PROFIT and NO INTEREST (0%). Utilizing these Biblical Principles, volunteer labor, and the Sweat Equity of the families that we build with, Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is able to make homeownership a reality to families that are working at minimum wage jobs!
For example the mortgage on a $50,000 Habitat home (monthly payments over the course of 20 years) would give you a principal payment of $208.33 a month, plus taxes and insurance. This is usually less than most families pay to rent!
Our standard house is a 3-bedroom, 1,076 square foot single story dwelling with an average selling price of $50,000.00. These houses are built with volunteer labor, which means that labor costs are very low and Almost Heaven Habitat makes no profit on these homes. The family only pays for the materials used to build their house and subcontracted labor. The houses that we build are appraised for $20,000.00 more that the sale price!!
Any person(s) may apply for an Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity house regardless of what county, city or state they live in, although Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity only builds houses in Pendleton County. On average it takes about 18 months from the time that a family applies until their new home is completed.
Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry dedicated to helping low-income families improve the conditions in which they live. Construction is done as a partnership between volunteers, partner families (applicants), Habitat staff, and a few subcontractors. The capital originally used to build the house is returned to the "Fund for Humanity" through the family's monthly house payments over a standard 20-year mortgage period. This money is then used to build more houses for other families in Pendleton County.
It is our belief that homeownership opportunities are a very effective and positive way to empower families. The Family Selection Committee is responsible for selecting families to purchase homes from Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity. The committee thoroughly reviews all application and all families are encouraged to apply regardless of their credit history.
